This Means More: Adam
Of all people in the world, I can thank Donald “Fucking” Trump, and his shitty show The Apprentice, for making me a Liverpool supporter.
In all seriousness it wasn’t. It was two of my coworkers in the set lighting department - Eddie Flandez and Dave Park. In the fall of 2009, I got the call to come in as an additional electric on The Apprentice. As a day player, my goal was to do a good job and hopefully get called back for more work. Luckily for me, the day went well, and I ended up working on the show for the next six weeks.
One of the first things I noticed about this lighting crew, and Dave and Eddie in particular, was that they were always streaming football games from illegal feeds in the electric shop. More often than not, it was Liverpool games, replays, highlights and docs playing on Eddie’s laptop. Over the next six weeks, Eddie and Dave told me stories about The Kop, Shankly, Paisley, King Kenny, Rushie and the comeback against AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League Final. The glories of The Reds inspired me to learn more about the club and city and I found many similarities between my hometown of Philadelphia and Liverpool. Both Liverpool and Philly are working-class towns that had seen better days in the 70s and 80s and their people are insanely passionate about their football teams. Scousers and Philadelphians live and die by the results of The Reds and Eagles and the culture of both cities are deeply ingrained their football teams. The Scousers’ deep passion for The Reds resonated deeply with me and it was clear that Liverpool FC was the only team for me in England. So, fuck you Donald Trump and thank you Eddie Flandez and Dave Park for making me a Red.
